Virtual Machines – Do They Solve One Problem But Create Another?

Posted by GeneralisimoRCB on 22nd April 2009

With the increasing popularity of Virtual Machines comes an issue that many may not be aware of. This problem is an age-old issue that has affected systems from the very early days of storage. It can cause hard drive failure leading to expensive data loss scenarios necessitating data recovery professionals. This problem is, of course, fragmentation.

If you are fortunate enough to have very deep pockets then you may be using SSD’s or solid state drives. These still remain expensive and are out of the reach of most users who still have to rely (although getting much faster) on the slowest and some would say the most vulnerable technology in your computer- the hard drive. Hard drive fragmentation can cause problems with virtual machines and in some cases even data loss.

Fragmentation is where a file is split into multiple components by the operating system to allow it to fit in available space of the hard disk drive. When you are already running one operating system, and fragmentation becomes an issue, running another highly fragmented system on top of this causes a tremendous slow down in performance.

Fragmentation will not only slow down your computer or server but due to the excessive and unwarranted extra movement of the heads, the life of your storage device(s) can be seriously reduced. The problem is not only limited to single drives however, even if you have a very well specked raid set up, fragmentation can get so severe that the only viable option is data recovery or server rebuild.

Operating systems handle fragmentation in different ways. Microsoft Windows, for example, pays little or no attention to the degree of fragmentation on a storage device, whereas Mac OS X goes some way to helping by automatically defragmenting files under 20 MB in size. Other Operating Systems handle file fragmentation in various ways, with varying levels of success.

Windows does ship with its own on board defragmentation tool but many would consider it a mere tick in the box as running the utility will mean that the hope of having a usable system in the meantime is improbable, and defragmentation could last for many hours or even overnight in some cases, so what are the other options.

Use automated defragmentation routines: Dependent upon your OS you can normally, either directly in the OS itself or via third party software; schedule defrags to run at times convenient to yourself.

Use dedicated hardware for the Virtual Machines: Whilst it may appear to be a contradiction in terms, running the virtual machine from a dedicated hard disk or RAID Array is probably the most efficient method of running the machine at all. It leads to the minimum of wear on the individual hard disk devices and means that running even simultaneous defragmentation is possible.

Ensuring your systems are working in tip top condition is vital to maintaining a productive IT infrastructure. For more great computing tips visit the IT Support Fareham , or click here for hard drive repair information and raid data recovery advice.

Use a Shaman PvP Guide to Dominate in Player Versus Player Combat

Posted by GeneralisimoRCB on 21st April 2009

Unless you are new to the Shaman class, you know just how versatile your character is. That versatility translates into impressive abilities in PvP combat. Think of it: ripping up the enemy with Windfury while your totems make torment your enemies and keep you safe from harm. If you’re skilled with this class, Shaman PvP combat is a blast. The downside to your Shaman being able to do so many things is that there’s a real learning curve you need to navigate to become good at player versus player combat.

What makes playing a Shaman difficult to master is the same thing that makes it so cool: all those totems. The Shaman class has a bunch of elemental specs with more than 30 different totems between them. There’s a wide variety of them, with sometimes subtle differences, such as that between the Grounding Totem which disrupts attacks while Earthshock interrupts them. And some of them are very specific as to which class they are effective against, like Poison Cleanse which removes poisons as they are cast at you which is extremely useful against Rogues. You can choose among totems that dispel attacks, keep Rogues out of combat, eliminate the threat of the Warrior’s Intercept, and slow a Hunter. Think of any situation that might come up in PvP combat, and there’s surely a totem that will help.

So learning as much as possible about the use of your totems is clearly key to your Shaman’s PvP success. A big concern is that creating totems takes time and mana. If you don’t know which to cast when, and how to keep them up while using your mana efficiently, your Shaman will run out of mana and totems while the enemy is still standing. Then they’re a sitting duck.

This is why getting yourself a quality Shaman PvP Guide is so important. A top-notch guide will show you which totems to use against which opposing classes. You’ll learn how to use your totems effectively against each type of opponent and how to maintain your Shaman’s health and mana while holding your own against whatever danger comes your way. It will show you the best way to defeat every type of opponent in solo duels. And it will show you ways that your Shaman can best fit into a 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5 team.

Because a quality PvP Guide incorporates the hard-earned experience of veteran players, it will contain strategies and tactics that won’t be obvious to newer players. It will leave very little if anything out of the equation, and save you the vast amounts of time you would have to spend learning everything on your own. Why spend the next few weeks earning miserable rankings, with no clear strategy, unsure about what totems to use against which opponents, getting slaughtered by players who know exactly how to defeat you when you can eliminate most of your learning curve with a quality Shaman PvP Guide?

Learn what you need to know for your Shaman to dominate in any PvP combat and score above a 2200 honor rating in less than 6 weeks with the PvP Bible. Visit PvP-Bible.info to learn more about this great PvP Guide and order your copy today!

Decisionbar Helps Me Trade Stocks Effectively

Posted by GeneralisimoRCB on 19th April 2009

Every market investor at one time or another tries to find what brand of stock software is the right one for you. It’s one of the most important choices a trader will make because of a few things. You can pick from a whole host of options, from Telechart to decision bar. Some can be a great help to your trading, some are crap and do more harm than good. They all charge a fee, but only some cost you money. Picking the right software program for you can make the difference between making money or losing your shirt.

Anyway I’m really here to talk about one stock program in particular, decisonbar. Decision Bar Trader is my favorite method of trading, and I have used it personally. Les Schawartz created the program and he’s one of the guru’s you can go to if you need help. Les created a system that is so easy to use, and for its ease it is amazingly simple for even beginner investors and the computer illiterate. Even if you are a beginner, it will take you only a couple of hours to master it.

It’s very easy to learn the system and methodology. The day you get the package in the mail you can crack it open, toss the disk into the computer, and be trading in minutes. Best of all you can get a 30 day risk free trial. The only thing you can’t get back is the postage. Decision Bar Trader works for stocks, futures, and the Forex markets. As mentioned above Decision Bar is applicable for all time frames as well as option traders.

Decision Bar does require you to have live data feed if you are day trading. I highly recommend that you use a live data feed even if you are not a day trader. Several live sources are given that also have a free trial to go along with the system. DecisionBar doesn’t do all the thinking for you, you do need to still use your brain. This isn’t a close solution. Your decision to take a trade or not trade is made easy once you understand the system.

How To Handle A Data Loss Nightmare.

Posted by GeneralisimoRCB on 19th April 2009

One very common cause of lost data amongst computer users from all walks of life; being they home computer users, business users or even IT support technicians, is that which occurs following an issue with the machine that prevents it from booting. Data loss is often a side affect of attempts to get the machine working again.

If you have been here before then at least you will have a vague or depending on your experience a deeper level of knowledge here, but for many potential data loss scenarios are a new computing horror to overcome, so what typically should we be looking out for?

Computer starts up but never reaches the login window: When this happens there are a number of potential problems that can be to blame, these range from hardware issues relating to the hard disk drive, down to driver incompatibility or the loss of important system files. Sometimes the problem can be resolved by booting up in Safe Mode, however, not always.

Your computer loses its zing and starts to feel very jaded and slow: This could be the result of hard drive fragmentation which can be rectified, or could be a more serious operating system problem. The potential for data loss is possible in both scenarios and the most serious operating system problems are best dealt with by doing a totally clean OS install.

Virus or Malware infection: Computer viruses and other Malware applications, if not properly handled from the start, will inevitably lead to situations whereby a full reinstall is the only option to truly remove all trace of the malicious software from the system.

OK so you have been unlucky and have suffered from the worst potential problem, your system is dead and the only option left is to reinstall your operating system. So how could you have avoided data loss?

The answer to preventing data loss is incredibly simple: backup, backup, backup. You would however be simply amazed at how many computer users at home or work fail to follow this simple protocol when backup today is so simple.

External hard drives can be purchased in most computer shops now days and a quick search online for online backup will also give you a number of remote back up options.

So what options do you have to get your important or vital data back? If things seem really bad and saving the data is crucial, don’t take any risks and contact a data recovery specialist. They will have a whole host of solutions available to save your data and whilst it cannot be guaranteed, they do stand the best chance of success.

You can find more great advice on data recovery and in particular for businesses raid data recovery here.

My Sons Play Too Many Video Games

Posted by GeneralisimoRCB on 19th April 2009

All my kids talk about getting every year for Christmas is video games if they don’t go downstairs and find Gears of War 2 under our new flocked christmas tree I do not know how they will survive. This drives me a little crazy since I like to encourage my kids to go outside. I would prefer to get them something like new football equipment or bikes, really anything they can do outside. Oh well I guess you just learn that kids are kids. Fighting with them is just too much work.

That being said I’ve tried to find some tricks for my family and video games. With a few techniques I try to get them outside more. First off I limit their time every day to one hour (they can earn more). I find placing a limit is important because then they know that anything above that is a privilege. To be more fair I’ve allowed them some methods of earning more television time. That leads me into my second trick. They have a few options to earn more television time, either playing outside or doing some chores for me. I like the chores option because it is nice for me to have a few less things to do, and the reward for them isn’t bad either. I intentionally made it with the purpose of them getting around one hour of television time for every one hour they spend on chores.

The number two way they get more television time is by spending some of their time outside. For every hour they spend outside they get fifteen minutes of video games. I know that it isn’t a huge payoff for the boys, but they like being outside and I do not think it’s a lot for me to ask of them. This mostly pays off for them on weekends. They can play outdoors for the day on Saturday and then spend the night playing video games. I do not even mind if they play a night of video games after a good day outside.

Anyway I guess that I don’t mind a game or two under the flocked christmas tree this year if it has the effect of getting my brats outside and getting some stuff done around the house for me. I hope they like their games, because I am going to like my “gift” of a little more control around the house.
