Internet search engines are very good tools for searching for someone. And you have to pay nothing. However, search engines were not designed for specifically for locating people, and that is not their specialty. Some people can jump to the conclusion that someone cannot be found on the Internet because the name entered into the search field did not bring back an exact match.

This is what happened when you enter the name of a person. The search engines try to bring back the perfect match to your request, based on what you typed in and the numbers that they interpret from your letters and words in the search field, not to mention doing this very quickly. When you are looking for something common, for example, “apple pies”, the results are probably pretty relevant. However, when it comes to a person’s name, the search engine needs help, unless your person is a famous movie star or some very popular Internet personality.
This is what you can do to help the search engines and to help yourself with your search. First, every search engine is very different, so you will need to treat the searches in each one as separate processes. One search engine might not do the job, but the next one or the one after that could possibly give you a solid lead.

Second, there are millions and millions of websites and a name alone can be a very tough find for the search engines. By narrowing the search, you can really help the search engine to give you a solid lead on your person. For example, “apple pies” is pretty general, and “apple pies made by grandmothers in Louisville, Kentucky” would be extremely specific. Somewhere in between is what you want when you search for a person. For example, add in the name of city or maybe an organization that the person belongs to with the name.
Anything that you add to the name will help your search. For example, something like the person’s career, hobby, or unique interests might narrow the search. If someone is into a special hobby, such as finger painting, you might add “finger painting” and the person’s full name. You will be surprised how much better the results will be with this method. Looking for a personal website is another possibility. You could type in “blog” or “website” and the full name. You will want to write out what types of searches and be like a detective.
If you hit a wall, try locating the individual’s associates, friends and family. Locating one of these other people on the Internet may be easier. One of these people, once found, can lead you directly to the person you seek. Never giving up and sticking to the free resources will more than often lead you to success.
